So long Gravit, hello Figma.
So long Gravit, hello Figma.
When I got my first (decent) computer, I was introduced to SVG. I had made simple mouse art in raster programs like paint and the like, but never vectors. When I got my first Windows 10 PC I downloaded Gravit and started to get to work and found that I love making vector designs. Gravit ended up changing their brand significantly and that drove me away, I believe now they're owned by Corel. Since then I've been using Figma since 2018. Oh how time flies.
To me, the design of functional graphics is almost a sort of problem solving situation similar to programming or network design. Making a good icon, flyer, logo, etc. is all about looking good no matter where it is, and then number of factors that go into it means you need to be creative! This is creativity mixed with practical logic similar to my other hobbies. With a design, you need to make sure it looks good big and little, grayscale and color, blurry, at a glance, etc.Â
That's why graphic design is so interesting to me. My true love will always be tech, but as creative hobbies go, this is one of my favorites. Unlike other hobbies, it's so extremely useful. I've done graphics for small organizations, the RSO I'm in (Bulldog Computer Professionals), and my own personal brand. I think having the ability to make something that is truly eye catching is truly underrated. This is especially so considering the fact there are so many simplified options out there that are fine, but obnoxiously bland, a sort of modern clip art. Taking things into my own hands is just so satisfying, and hopefully satisfying for the people who have to look at it.
